What is skin? The answer to this is more complex than you’d imagine. Skin is actually an organ! As an organ, and not just a covering to be admired and abused, your skin must be kept healthy. Lines, wrinkles, dark circles, crows feet, dry patches and discoloration, to name a few symptoms, might be an indication that your skin is not receiving the best care.

Your skin needs good nutrition, it needs to be healthy so it can work properly and produce the needed elements like collagen that will keep it healthy looking, and to have the cells in a state where they can absorb, moisture, cleanse impurities and avoid disease.

When trying to select an under eye or skin care product that will suit your needs, there is a huge array of choice. Do you need an eye cream? Do you need a general skin care product? Can multiple solutions be combined easily? … What I like to do is to look at the following areas:

Rather than write long boring details about some of the products I have tried or am interested in trying, I decided that I’d use a table to provide you a quick snapshot of some of the information I found in web searches, as well as some of my personal experience or feedback of others that might guide you. BASQNYC Cucumber Tea Eye Gel: 5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST eye gel! This is far & away the best eye gel I have ever used. It really reduces puffiness and has a great, cooling feeling. I give it my highest recommendation to anyone. Give your eyes a fresh start with Basq’s soothing cooling Cucumber Tea Eye Gel. This antioxidant rich blend with Cucumber and Green Tea helps soothe eye puffiness and smooth fine lines while rich hydrators and a gentle cooling tingle awaken eye area. This works well on my skin, but apparently is not optimal for those with dry skin. It works magic for me when the pets and pollen make my allergies flare, helps with itchy eyes. Did not help with lines, but reduces bags/circles. Since I don’t use as my primary solution this is a good niche product for me.
Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream; if you want to lighten spots, you should use a very protective sunscreen everyday.. if you want them to fade. … an under eye cream that I use to try and sort out dark circles and it does nothing. … It’s whitening, it’s good for scaring/sun damage. It reduced the size of my pores, cleared up any blemishes and made my skin look younger! ….. A rich eye-area cream that enhances skin’s radiance while providing exceptional protection against UVA/UVB rays. This sun-protection essential minimizes the appearance of UV-induced fine lines and wrinkles, and promotes resilient-looking skin. This product is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective UV sunscreen.		This product has great SPF when I’m going to be outdoors. It works to make my skin look good. I use as a niche solution for this, but use LifeCell as my primary go-to cream. I would not skip using this however when in the sun! Regular sunscreen near my eyes drives me crazy!

This product was one I tried for a while. While the results were OK, and the costs reasonable, I found that a slightly more expensive product could do a better job and actually last longer.

This non-greasy cream is hypoallergenic and clinically proven.		I have not personally tried this cream, but a few friends tried it and it did not agree with their skin. I have heard of good results from some other people.

This product did appear to have great immediate results. It left my skin feeling a bit too soft (probably my skin type). My husband’s sister uses it quite regularly and it works well for her.

Developed with Shiseido-exclusive Anti-Photowrinkle System, consisting of plant extract Chlorella, to counteract the appearance of future wrinkles. Recommended for dry and very dry skin. Pat around eye area, morning and night, as last step in your skincare routine.		I like Shiseido products in general, but do not have dry skin. My best friend who does have very dry skin swears by this. Works better on lines than on dark circles.
Regenerist Touch of Concealer Eye Regenerating Cream combines advanced hydrating amino-peptide + B3 complex to visibly lift and regenerate your look with a touch of concealer to instantly diminish the appearance of dark circles around the eyes. Light & Non-Greasy – Fragrance-Free – Suitable for everyday use. The results? Instantly brightens and regenerates for eyes that look more youthful, awakened and vibrant.		This product felt nice to apply, but seemed to be on the lighter side of solutions. Perhaps for younger women this would be a good early treatment.

Magnolia extract helps reduce the appearance of dark circles, while horse chestnut extract helps reduce puffiness.		Burt’s products feel clean. They tend to be on the lighter side of solutions. Perhaps for younger women this would be a good early treatment. I tried some from a sample once, but needed something more comprehensive.
Clinique Repairwear Intensive; What it is: An anti-aging eye cream that targets the appearance of lines. What it is formulated to do: This potent anti-aging eye cream stimulates skin’s natural repair functions, specifically targeting the appearance of eye-area lines and wrinkles. It replenishes antioxidants to strengthen vulnerable skin for a brighter, more vibrant, and refreshed look. What else you need to know: This patent pending product is ophthalmologist tested and ideal for all skin types.		I typically don’t use Clinique. Those that like clinique might like to give this one a shot, but is mostly for lines and is not known to impact circles and bags.
100% Pure Caffeine Eye Cream; Anti-inflammatory, caffeine rich green tea and coffee de-puffs and reduces swelling while increasing circulation to alleviate and brighten dark circles. The Result: With continued use, this fortifying creme leaves eyes looking younger.		This one is on my list of products to try. My sister uses it, but cautioned that you do need to give it a few months to really work, and may need continual use.
Murad Resurgence Renewing Eye Cream; A moisturizing, conditioning and firming eye cream. Murad Renewing Eye Cream Combats signs of hormonal aging around the eye area Firms, smoothes and hydrates Increases elasticity Diminishes fine lines and wrinkles Brightens pigmentation and under eye circles		I have not tried this, but thought it might be useful for readers with hormonal issues. Products with Tretinoin seem to work really well for many people’s needs.
Derma E- Pycnogenol Hyaluronic Acid Eye Creme; Pycnogenol and Hyaluronic Acid Eye Creme. Deeply hydrating the sensitive skin around your eyes, this blend of skin specific nutrients and antioxidants is highly effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It dramatically hydrates and nourishes		This product did work well on lines, but left me feeling a bit greasy and did not help with circles. If you have drier skin this could be good.

The list of ingredients in LifeCell has an impressive array of substances that when combined together produce strong results. I examined the list:

water, caprylic triglyercerides, ethoxydiglycol, stearyl alcohol, stearic acid, glyceryl stearate, disopropyl dimer dilinoleate, magnesium aluminum silicate, oxido reductases, soy peptides, cyclomethicone, hydrolyzed rice bran extract, deanol, dithiolane-3-pentanoic acid (D3-PA), copper gluconate, magnesium aspartate, zinc gluconate, acetyl hexapeptide-3, idebenone (CQ10), ascorbyl palmitate, fumed silica, silicon dioxide, propyl gallate, BHA, citric acid, propylene glycol…

The three that really stood out (since I was looking for long term effects, not just a cover up) were D3-PA, CQ10 and Ascorbyl Palmitate. I had read about D3-PA, but could not immediately find it on the list, because the long-form of the ingredient was listed. Next CQ10; I was disappointed NOT to see this in the list, but after some research found that idebenone is another term for the same thing. Finally, I looked up Ascorbyl Palmitate because it sounded familiar. I initially thought “oh –vitamin-C”, but came to realize that it is much more.

1. D3-PA or Dithiolane-3 Pentoic Acid, is a powerful antioxidant that dissolves well in water as well as fat. It changes cell metabolism by allowing Nitric Oxide to be formed (which is usually a gas, and is hard to add to products. It helps to expand the blood vessels, improving circulation and overall skin health.
2. CQ10 or Ubiquinone is found in some many foods that are rich in Essential Fatty Acids. Most people’s diet is not rich in these foods. It helps the skin retain moisture and almost form a natural shield. Together with CQ10, this can also assist in Collagen production.
3. Finally, Ascorbyl Palmitate. This is absorbed into the cells giving the benefits of Vitamin-C, but going where Vitamin C cannot (the fat cells). It reduces inflamation, firms the skin and helps with color uniformity.
